 Stompasaurus Line Dance Competition Rules

 

1. Eligibility & Divisions

 

  • Competitors must register in the correct division based on skill level.

    • Novice

    • Intermediate

  • Event organizer reserves the right to reassign competitors if entered incorrectly.

  • Competitors may only enter one division

 

 

2. Competition Format

 

  • All routines are line dance choreography (no partners or lead/follow).

  • Dancers will perform in heats if the division is large.

  • The first two walls must be performed to step sheet. If a dance is phrased, the first two walls as well as one wall of part b must be to step sheet.

  • Competitors must wear their numbers on their back.

  • Dances will start facing the judges.

  • Music will be roughly two minutes depending where it lines up with the walls.

  • Finals will be the entire song

  • Heats within a division will be back to back, with a short break between divisions to allow the judges to finalize scoring. there will be breaks between preliminaries and finals while the judges deliberate as well as a break between finals and announcing the winners. social dancing will be happening during this time. 

  • The Secret competition will be after finals but before winner announcements. 

  • In the Event that multiple heats are needed for the secret competition, the second heat will stay outside the room while the first heat competes.

 

 

3. Music & Dance Selection

 

  • Music is selected by the organizer.

  • The same music length will be used for multiple heats in the event there is multiple heats. (Roughly two minutes, depending on where the wall ends)

  • Finals will be the entire song

  • Dances will be:

    • Played in the order listed

  • Dancers must demonstrate:

    • Timing

    • Technique

    • Floor awareness

    • Musicality

  • If multiple dances are performed, dancers must adapt quickly between styles/tempos.

 

 

4. Floorcraft & Conduct

 

  • Dancers must maintain awareness of others at all times.

  • No traveling excessively outside your space. You must stay in your assigned spot on the floor.

  • Collisions or interference may result in point deductions.

  • No sitting, laying on the floor, splits or acrobatics unless specified in the choreography

  • Good sportsmanship is expected:

    • No coaching from sidelines

    • No disruptive behavior

 

 

5. Judging Criteria

 

Judges will score based on:

 

Technique

 

  • Clean footwork

  • Balance & control

  • Weight transfers

 

Timing

 

  • Staying on beat

  • Musical phrasing

 

Execution

 

  • Accuracy of choreography

  • Consistency

  • Understanding of musical style

 

Styling & Performance

 

  • Confidence

  • Expression

  • Personal style

  • Connection to the judges and audience

  • Upper body choreography

  • Staying within the flow of the dance

  • Styling that differs from the step sheet is only permitted AFTER the second wall. If there is a restart within the first two walls that counts as a wall. Ex. A restart is in the second wall - after the restart that is now wall 3 and styling is permitted.

  • Upper body styling is highly encouraged during the first two walls even if the footwork is still to step sheet.

 

 

6. Scoring & Placement

 

  • Scores from all judges are combined.

  • Highest total score determines placement.

  • Ties may be broken by:

    • Majority judge ranking

    • Callback round

  • All judging is final and cannot be disputed.

  • Feedback is allowed but please do not ask the judges at the event. A request for feedback can be submitted after the event concludes via Stompasaurus.

 

 

7. Attire

 

  • Western, casual, or themed outfits permitted.

  • Clothing must allow safe movement.

  • Footwear must be:

    • Non-damaging to the floor

    • Secure (no slipping hazards)

  • Costuming is encouraged but not judged unless specified.

  • Props or clothing items discarded are not allowed.

 

 

8. Choreography Rules

 

  • Dancers must perform the recognized step sheet for two walls before footwork and timing styling is allowed.

  • Minor styling differences are allowed however it must move with the flow of the dance and fit the style and music

  • Major changes to choreography may result in deductions.

 

 

9. Restarts & Errors

 

  • No restarts once music begins.

  • If a dancer stops dancing:

    • They may continue, but points may be deducted.

  • Music or technical failure:

    • Round will be restarted.

 

 

10. Safety & Liability

 

  • By participating, dancers accept all risks associated with the event.

  • The organizer is not responsible for:

    • Injury

    • Lost or stolen items

  • Unsafe behavior may result in disqualification.

 

 

11. Photography & Media Release

 

  • By registering, participants consent to:

    • Photography

    • Video recording

    • Use of media for promotion

 

 

12. Registration & Check-In

 

  • Competitors must check in before 6:30pm

  • Late arrivals may be disqualified.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable unless event is cancelled.

 

 

13. Disqualification

 

Grounds for disqualification include:

 

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct

  • Failure to follow choreography

  • Unsafe dancing

  • Ignoring event staff instructions

 

 

14. Organizer Rights

 

  • The organizer reserves the right to:

    • Adjust schedule

    • Combine divisions

    • Modify rules if necessary

 

15. Judges

 

  • Judges are selected with varying backgrounds of dance

  • A scoring format will be provided to the judges for consistent scoring

  • Judges may not give favouritism or special treatment to any contestant and all contestants will be judged fairly on the same criteria

  • Video may be used during deliberation

  • All judging is final
